no where for both of us
but Laurel’s umbrella.

Railway cafe’
the ordered breakfast
shaped to fit all.

Solitaire card games
next door’s daughters
all home safe tonight.

Thai remains
on the throw away plates
cheap motel.

Midnight swim
in the dunes between beer bottles
our summer clothes.

Pet shop
for a while an old girl
with her Christmas list.

Sunlit lake
the salmon swallows bugs
from the hole it just made.

Fire works
shortening his chain
the guard dog’s fear.

Grandmother’s garden
wiping the damp mosses
from her sand-stone seats.

Clear cold light
on the kitchen table
only the passage of the moon.
